Second-year tight end Jared Cook has had his highlights and lowlights this offseason with the Titans. On the plus side, he’s put on 10 pounds of muscle and has displayed some fine athleticism in drills. However, the coaches have seen inconsistencies in his work, including slowing down on routes when he thinks he’s open — a sign that perhaps he’s not yet fully in sync with the playbook or the speed of the game. “He has good days and bad days, but he is doing better,” Heimerdinger said. “He has made some plays, but he still has a ways to go. He flashes that talent, but we need him to do it all the time.”

Speaking with Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, the Washington Post reported that while Clinton Portis has the top spot on the running back depth chart heading into camp, no determination has been made over which running back will play. In fact, Shanahan seems careless as to who gets it so long as the Redskins can forge a strong run game — something that should help Larry Johnson get involved. “We haven’t even talked about Clinton being the first. I just said that because I assume he is,” Shanahan said. “It really doesn’t matter. Whoever is best for that defense that week. There’s no two or three. There’s really no four or five.”

The Ravens have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with QB Marc Bulger. The deal, struck Wednesday, will become complete if Bulger passes a physical. Bulger spent the previous nine years of his career with the Rams. The two-time Pro Bowler is expected to compete to be the backup to Joe Flacco, and his competition will be Troy Smith and John Beck. Bulger has 27 games of at least 300 yards passing during his career. In 2008, he became the fifth-fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach the 20,000-yard passing miles tone, doing so in only 81 games. He fought a series of injuries last season and played in only nine games before placing in injured reserve on Dec. 26.

The Sacramento Bee reports that rookie Anthony Dixon will be the No. 3 RB on the depth chart for the 49ers this year behind Frank Gore and Glen Coffee. There was speculation that Dixon could overtake Gore for the No. 2 spot, but the paper reports that Coffee has proven to be a reliable blocker in passing situations. With Dixon dealing with a hamstring injury all offseason, it’s unlikely that he can pass Coffee as the backup option.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that Bucs WR Reggie Brown is having a good offseason after coming to Tampa Bay in a trade from Philadelphia. “I’ve been impressed with Reggie Brown in how he carries himself like a pro,” Bucs WR coach Eric Yarber said. “Early on in camp and OTAs, he got a lot of looks and caught a lot of balls. Right now, you might not see the flash. But as a coaching staff, we see it on film. He’s open a lot. He just hasn’t gotten the opportunity to make plays. But he brings a veteran savvy to our group with know-how. I’ve told a lot of the guys to watch how he prepares and how he runs routes.” Said coach Raheem Morris: “He’s a guy who runs really good routes and has really good hands. The knock on him when he came out was that he […]
