The Lions have agreed to terms with CB Amari Spievey, their third-round pick from Iowa. The team confirmed the agreement Wednesday without disclosing terms. Amari, the 66th selection overall, was an All-Big Ten player who will get a chance to play immediately on a team that lacks cornerbacks. Spievey was a star running back in Middleton, Conn., who was switched to defense as a freshman at Iowa. He ended up spending a season at Iowa Central Community College before going back to play for the Hawkeyes.

Lions RB Aaron Brown possesses speed, but it may not be enough to secure a roster spot come September. Head coach Jim Schwartz was not pleased with his performance during the minicamp workout. “He’s had some inconsistency,” Schwartz said. “He really needs to pick it up a little bit.”

The Detroit News reports that Lions rookie RB Jahvid Best is turning heads at minicamp. He has impressed his teammates all offseason, including Wednesday when the final minicamp began. “We’re not in pads, we’re not really tackling and everything,” Best said. “But, I mean, it does feel good to kind of get in the open field and go.” His teammates like what they see. “You hear about how explosive Best is and then you see him catch a ball in the flat, stick his foot in the ground and get up field like a Mustang,” Burleson said. “He’s just extremely explosive. I’ve seen him catch a ball at a dead stop, stick his foot in the ground and get up field extremely fast.” Coach Jim Schwartz has seen Best improve throughout the offseason. “We threw a lot at him in rookie camp, to get him exposed to a lot of […]

Detroit TE Brandon Pettigrew’s knee continues to improve. Coach Jim Schwartz believes Pettigrew has worked hard to get back on the field. “He’s made great progress on his rehab, and if these workouts were a week later, you’d probably see him in seven-on-seven drills. He’s close,” Schwartz said Thursday. On Wednesday, Pettigrew was limited to individual drills during minicamp.

Morris looks to be in good shape but may be the odd man out in the backfield with the return of Kevin Smith (knee) and the impressive progress of Best. Smith participated in seven-on-seven drills for the first time Wednesday.
