With four of the five tight ends at camp sidelined by minor injuries, Bear Pascoe has gotten almost all the work. Whether it’s one practice or two, the second-year pro has been the main target for quarterbacks Eli Manning, Jim Sorgi and Rhett Bomar, and he is loving every exhaustive second. The performance has impressed coach Tom Coughlin and put Pascoe on the road to earning a spot on the roster. Kevin Boss has the Giants’ starting job nailed down despite ankle and hamstring injuries, so Pascoe is aiming to back him up. “If I can keep working and improving like I am and show Coach Coughlin my good work ethic, most definitely I think I can earn a spot on this roster,” he said. “I am planning on it.”

Giants safety Kenny Phillips, who returned to practice this week for the first time since major knee surgery in September, made his best play of camp on Wednesday, breaking up a long sideline pass from Jim Sorgi to WR Victor Cruz. “That definitely felt good,” Phillips said. “I feel like what I’ve been doing for these last 11 months and the way the coaches have been letting me gradually get in the ballgame has paid off. I’m just looking forward to that next step - no pain, no soreness. I feel good with my range and everything so I’m just looking forward to it. That’s all I’m waiting on.”

Giants DE Mathias Kiwanuka attended a linebackers meeting Friday before taking reps on the strongside in practice Saturday. He and defensive line coach Robert Nunn agreed that the versatility of players like DT Chris Canty (who can play inside and outside) allow Kiwanuka to switch positions. From time to time during camp, the Giants have shown a five DL front. Canty slides to end, DT Rocky Bernard enters the game at tackle, and Kiwanuka moves to his old position, linebacker, giving him the option to stand or to drop his hand on the ground.

Giants S Kenny Phillips, who suffered a serious knee injury last season, is expected to return to the practice field for the first time Monday. Head coach Tom Coughlin said Phillips will participate in at least one practice. “I don’t care if it’s one play, I’m going to be out there,” an enthusiastic Phillips said. “I think they could do it without me, but I’ll go out there and try anyway.”

Giants WR Sinorice Moss is enjoying a fine training camp, and determined to make the team despite a glut of talented players at receiver. A second-round draft pick in 2006, Moss has failed to meet his expectations, but turns criticism into motivation. “It seems like every year since I’ve been here they’ve pretty much written me off as being the odd man out,” he told NFL.com. “I mean, it’s true. It’s things that I’ve seen, the things that I’ve read since I’ve been here, I’ve kind of been the odd man out. That’s definitely fuel for me, because I know what I can bring to this team with the opportunity given to myself. I know the work that I put in each and every year.” Moss has been working as the team’s punt and kick returner after Domenik Hixon was lost for the season, and hopes to continue doing so […]
