The Newark Star-Ledger reports that Giants LB Antonio Pierce has been told he’s been released. Pierce’s season ended early when he suffered a bulging disk in his neck; he has since said that he’s recovered. The linebacker confirmed the news to the paper via email. “I talked to coach [Tom] Coughlin, I talked to [GM] Jerry Reese, I talked to as many people as I could talk to before leaving the building. I told them I have nothing but love for the Giants and I always will,” Pierce said. “There’s no animosity at all. I’m very grateful. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity Ernie Accorsi gave me five years ago.”

Giants WR Steve Smith said in an interview with CBSSports.com that QB Eli Manning doesn’t get the credit he deserves as one of the best passers in the NFL. Manning set new career highs in passing yards (4,021) and touchdowns (27) while throwing 14 interceptions. And Smith said Manning should continue to thrive with an improving receiving corps, which features Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham and Kevin Boss. “He’s great,” Smith said of Manning. “He knows everything. He’s really smart. He’s on his way to being Peyton-like. I think he’s just going to keep getting better.”

Giants WR Steve Smith said in an interview with CBSSports.com that he wants to build on his 2009 season. Smith set the franchise single-season record for catches in 2009 with 107, and his 1,220 receiving yards were the second-highest total in team history. He also added seven touchdowns. “It feels great,” Smith said of his play in 2009. “This is one of the dreams you have as a kid. To accomplish that is amazing. It was a breakout year for me.” Smith said he took advantage of the chance to start last season, but he wants to build on his performance in 2010 and improve. “I want to catch some more deep balls,” said Smith, who spent most of the season as a possession receiver.

Tuck admitted that the injury held him back on the field in ‘09. “I can just say that I wasn’t the player I was last year. Take that for what it is,” he said Monday. “There were a lot of things that I wanted to do that the shoulder wouldn’t allow me to.”

Head coach Tom Coughlin had no updates on the injury suffered to rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks (hamstring) on Monday night. “These things are going to take a while,” Coughlin said. “We’ve got some guys who are sore and banged up, but who’s going to be able to practice and who isn’t? We’re going to have to give it that extra day.”

Former Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress wants to get a break from prison, but prosecutors said Tuesday they will likely try to block his bid for work release because he hasn’t served enough time. The former New York Giant applied for a work furlough - which would let him spend some portion of his time at home - on Nov. 25, about two months into his two-year sentence for carrying an unlicensed gun that went off and wounded him at a Manhattan nightclub. State prison system officials are expected to decide on his request next month. Prosecutors said the bullet narrowly missed a security guard, and they insisted on at least a two-year prison term. A quick furlough would send “a very bad message,” Manhattan Chief Assistant District Attorney Mark Dwyer said Tuesday. “It’s too early,” he said. Burress’ lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, declined to comment.

The slumping New York Giants placed linebacker Antonio Pierce on injured reserve Monday with a bulging disk in his neck, ending the season for one of their defensive leaders. Pierce has missed two games since being ruled out indefinitely after an MRI exam Nov. 20 revealed the bulging disk. The Giants decided to put Pierce on IR after he received a second opinion from Dr. Robert Watkins, an orthopedic surgeon based in Los Angeles. The 31-year-old Pierce, in his ninth NFL season and fifth with the Giants, has 55 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in nine games this season. Chase Blackburn is expected to continue starting in his place.

Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw (ankle/foot) was back in the boot Thursday, but coach Tom Coughlin said that doesn’t imply a setback. “That’s just the way it was supposed to go,” he said. Coughlin added he was surprised Bradshaw practiced Wednesday, although he was limited. Bradshaw has been dealing with this injury for several weeks but has not missed any game action.
