49ers DE Ray McDonald has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence. San Mateo County Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti said Thursday that McDonald’s attorney entered the plea on the player’s behalf on Monday. Guidotti says a pretrial conference has been set for Sept. 28 and a jury trial for Oct. 18, if he does not resolve the case. McDonald was arrested June 12 after a California Highway Patrol officer pulled him over in his black BMW on Interstate 280 for allegedly driving 94 mph. His blood-alcohol content was not released. McDonald publicly apologized after he was booked into a Redwood City jail. If convicted, the 25-year-old could face a maximum of six months in jail.

Comcast SportsNet suggests that there will be a camp battle for the No. 3 receiving job in San Francisco between fourth-year receiver Jason Hill and recently acquired Ted Ginn Jr. While Ginn has struggled coming up with receptions in offseason minicamps, Hill has improved and has been considered a standout by most of the people covering the team.

49ers RB Glen Coffee had a miserable rookie season in 2009, averaging less than 3 yards per carry and getting only 12 rushing attempts over the final 11 games. Not shifty enough to go around anyone or fast enough to run past them, Coffee was asked to bulk up to 220 pounds so he can run over would-be tacklers. The weight gain has paid off: Despite adding 15 pounds of muscle, Coffee doesn’t seem to have lost any speed, and his receiving and blocking looks sharper than a year ago. Of course, no one’s tried to tackle him yet, but Coffee has all but locked up the backup rushing role behind Gore.

The 49ers may have a tough decision to make at fullback, where Moran Norris leads Brit Miller. Norris had a bad year last season, becoming so one-dimensional that defenses stacked the box while expecting run plays. Miller is less physical, but he’s younger, cheaper, far more of a receiving threat, and one of the team’s better special-teamers.

The Sacramento Bee reports that rookie Anthony Dixon will be the No. 3 RB on the depth chart for the 49ers this year behind Frank Gore and Glen Coffee. There was speculation that Dixon could overtake Gore for the No. 2 spot, but the paper reports that Coffee has proven to be a reliable blocker in passing situations. With Dixon dealing with a hamstring injury all offseason, it’s unlikely that he can pass Coffee as the backup option.
